Liverpool set to hire Rodgers as new manager

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool appears set to hire Brendan Rodgers as its new manager.

The hire would vault the Northern Irishman from relative obscurity to one of the toughest jobs in soccer, with his current club Swansea claiming a deal was expected to be finalized on Thursday.

Following talks with Liverpool's American owners - Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox - Rodgers told Swansea on Wednesday he has been offered the job as Kenny Dalglish's replacement at Anfield and was ready to accept.

"We are trying to finalize within the next 24 hours," Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins. "Although we are very disappointed to lose such a talented, young British manager, we didn't wish to stand in his way."

Liverpool will have to pay compensation to Swansea, reported to be in the region $6 million, because Rodgers has three years left on his contract after signing a new deal in January.

In what will be one of the most low-key managerial appointments made by the traditional English powerhouse in a generation, the 39-year-old Rodgers was preferred to Wigan manager Roberto Martinez despite having only one season's experience in England's top division.

That year, however, was a highly successful one, with Swansea finishing 11th in its first season in the Premier League, earning plenty of admirers because of the Welsh team's attractive, possession-based style of play. It made Rodgers one of the most sought managers in Britain.

"We wish Brendan every success in the future," Jenkins said. "We will always remain good friends and we thank him for all his hard work and passion at this football club over the past two years. We shall now refocus and quickly start the process of finding his replacement to continue the great work Brendan has carried out at this football club."

Liverpool, which has yet to comment on the managerial situation, fired Dalglish two weeks ago after a disappointing campaign in the Premier League, where it placed eighth - its lowest finish in 18 years. The Reds' last match of the season was a 1-0 loss at Swansea, leaving them 17 points off a Champions League qualification spot, the minimum goal of the owners.

Dalglish guided Liverpool to victory in the League Cup final, ending the club's six-year trophy drought, but it wasn't enough to convince management he was the man to return the five-time European champions to glory.

Liverpool targeted the hiring of a young manager to replace Dalglish and also held talks with Martinez, who led Wigan to survival in the Premier League with a stunning late-season run that included a 1-0 win at Liverpool. But it decided on Rodgers, who was once a youth-team manager at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and has also managed second-tier clubs Watford and Reading.

Over ?4 million in fake pound coins seized in north London

The Metropolitan Police, which uncovered the haul, believes it is the biggest of its kind recorded in the UK.

A total of ?4.1 million in counterfeit coins was seized on Wednesday during raids in Enfield, north London, Hertfordshire and Essex.

Detectives said it was a "significant blow" to the crime gang behind the scam.

But officers said they believe some of the money produced may already be in circulation.

Three men, aged 52, 43 and 27, were arrested and are being held at a north London police station.

The three properties where the money was recovered are believed to be storage locations.

Officers have yet to identify where the coins were pressed.

Detective Inspector Bruce South, from the Met's projects team, said: "This seizure is a significant blow to the network behind it; individuals clearly intent on undermining the UK monetary system by producing counterfeit currency on an industrial scale.

"It is yet another example of the work this team is carrying out on a daily basis to tackle organised criminal networks."

First ever Google Glasses video unveiled ? shot on a trampoline

The first ever video shot with Google's Project Glass high-tech specs has been unveiled by the Internet giant. A trampoline is involved. And a bit of bouncing.

Google?s high-tech specs bounced back into the headlines on Friday when the company released a video shot by someone wearing the special glasses while using a trampoline.

The 15-second video was posted on Google+ this week, alongside a bunch of photos also taken with the specs.

Shot in 720p, viewers get to see a point-of-view shot of someone (presumably not Sergey Brin, though who knows?) wearing the glasses while bouncing up and down on a trampoline, throwing in a few backflips for good measure. And yes, the specs stay on.

The video (you can check it out below) displays none of the glasses? expected augmented reality features ? so no on-screen information about local weather conditions, no location shown on Google Maps and no ads featuring trampoline stores in the area.

Up to now Google has given little indication as to when the smartphone-on-your-face spectacles might be launched ? engineers no doubt still has much work to do on their development and design. There is also a dearth information regarding possible price, though we wouldn?t be surprised to see them costing around the same as a high-end smartphone.

After much speculation about the possibility of Google working on the creation of futuristic specs, the company finally came clean last month, announcing it was indeed developing AR glasses. Calling its endeavor Project Glass, Google said in a blog post that its plan is to ?help you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment.?

The Mountain View company has some competition though ? soon after it announced Project Glass, sunglasses maker Oakley piped up and said it too has been working on producing a pair of AR glasses. Oakley said it?s been developing its specs for the last 15 years. Let?s hope Google doesn?t take that long with its own design.

Several of our staffers are fans of Netgear's N900, a dual-band unit that can certainly handle everything you'd care to throw at it, although it does only have USB 2.0 ports. It's in the genes: Research pinpoints how plants know when to flower

ScienceDaily (May 26, 2012) ? Scientists believe they've pinpointed the last crucial piece of the 80-year-old puzzle of how plants "know" when to flower.

Determining the proper time to flower, important if a plant is to reproduce successfully, involves a sequence of molecular events, a plant's circadian clock and sunlight.

Understanding how flowering works in the simple plant used in this study -- Arabidopsis -- should lead to a better understanding of how the same genes work in more complex plants grown as crops such as rice, wheat and barley, according to Takato Imaizumi, a University of Washington assistant professor of biology and corresponding author of a paper in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

"If we can regulate the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this. Knowing the mechanism gives us the tools to manipulate this," Imaizumi said. Along with food crops, the work might also lead to higher yields of plants grown for biofuels.

At specific times of year, flowering plants produce a protein known as FLOWERING LOCUS T in their leaves that induces flowering. Once this protein is made, it travels from the leaves to the shoot apex, a part of the plant where cells are undifferentiated, meaning they can either become leaves or flowers. At the shoot apex, this protein starts the molecular changes that send cells on the path to becoming flowers.

Changes in day length tell many organisms that the seasons are changing. It has long been known that plants use an internal time-keeping mechanism known as the circadian clock to measure changes in day length. Circadian clocks synchronize biological processes during 24-hour periods in people, animals, insects, plants and other organisms.

Imaizumi and the paper's co-authors investigated what's called the FKF1 protein, which they suspected was a key player in the mechanism by which plants recognize seasonal change and know when to flower. FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor, meaning it is activated by sunlight.

"The FKF1 photoreceptor protein we've been working on is expressed in the late afternoon every day, and is very tightly regulated by the plant's circadian clock," Imaizumi said. "When this protein is expressed during days that are short, this protein cannot be activated, as there is no daylight in the late afternoon. When this protein is expressed during a longer day, this photoreceptor makes use of the light and activates the flowering mechanisms involving FLOWERING LOCUS T. The circadian clock regulates the timing of the specific photoreceptor for flowering. That is how plants sense differences in day length."

This system keeps plants from flowering when it's a poor time to reproduce, such as the dead of winter when days are short and nights are long.

The new findings come from work with the plant Arabidopsis, a small plant in the mustard family that's often used in genetic research. They validate predictions from a mathematical model of the mechanism that causes Arabidopsis to flower that was developed by Andrew Millar, a University of Edinburgh professor of biology and co-author of the paper.

"Our mathematical model helped us to understand the operating principles of the plants' day-length sensor," Millar said. "Those principles will hold true in other plants, like rice, where the crop's day-length response is one of the factors that limits where farmers can obtain good harvests. It's that same day-length response that needs controlled lighting for laying chickens and fish farms, so it's just as important to understand this response in animals.

"The proteins involved in animals are not yet so well understood as they are in plants but we expect the same principles that we've learned from these studies to apply."

First author on the paper is Young Hun Song, a postdoctoral researcher in Imaizumi's UW lab. The other co-authors are Benjamin To, who was a UW undergraduate student when this work was being conducted, and Robert Smith, a University of Edinburgh graduate student. The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health, and the United Kingdom's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

When I went to Australia earlier this year, I overdosed on egg and bacon rolls.? I sent an enthusiastic email to Grace about how I was enjoying recreating my own here at home, and she wrote me back that she is pretty much vegan these days.? I was a bit crestfallen that my enthusiasm for bacon had fallen on deaf ears, but it got me to thinking whether I could ever make that transition.? I took a stroll through our archives to see what dishes we had here for vegans and I decided to just do a Best of.? We have quite a few recipes in the archives which are made with the addition of a sprinkle of cheese which would be an easily skipped ingredient but I have not included those here.? Visuatari Turns Game Console into Game Field

Videomapping is the process of using a digital camera in order to record an environment in order to have it interact with digital content that is projected onto that environment. Today, Tonner Vi showed off their unique videomapping installation called Visuatari. This project has a retro video game console as the center of the image, while old Nintendo games play around it and on it. In the video above, Mario is seen jumping on the game console in order to escape Pacman. The project is interesting because it turns the normal 2D games and characters into 3D images.

RealNetworks to refund $2 million, 'guilt' box stays un-ticked

Paid for subscriptions from RealNetworks you didn't ask for a few years ago? You may be eligible for a refund. Washington State's Attorney General sued the company over a free trial of its Rhapsody music service, which had a pre-ticked box for additional content that went unnoticed by many who signed up. When clients stopped the trial without also canceling the extra options, charges often accumulated in the hundreds of dollars before being seen. While admitting no wrongdoing, RealNetworks agreed to discontinue the boxes, comply with federal laws and give refunds to any customers who signed up that way between January 2007 and December 2009. If that might be you, expect a postcard from RealNetworks or check their website to apply for a refund. Hopefully you'll be less, um, ticked.

PENN STATE (US) ? People in rural counties who work for themselves may add a boost to local economies, improving income and job growth, according to economists.

The share of self-employed workers in nonmetro counties significantly predicted personal income and job growth, as well as declines in family poverty levels, says Stephan Goetz, professor of agricultural economics and regional economics at Penn State, and director of the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development.

?We often look at self-employment as a stopgap measure, something done out of desperation,? Goetz says. ?But, in fact, self-employment has a tangible effect in raising income growth and lowering poverty.?

The researchers say that the self-employed can perform a range of services in a community.

?They can be the people who mow your lawn and shovel your walk,? Goetz says. ?But they can also be more innovative entrepreneurs, like the person with a new technology idea or someone who is manufacturing medical equipment.?

Goetz and Anil Rupasingha, research economist and policy advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta, reported their findings in the online version of Papers in Regional Science. They examined statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis on the self-employed in 3,000 metro and nonmetro counties.

People who work for themselves, but do not own farms, have become a larger part of the economic mix of rural counties.

Between 1969 and 2009, the number of the self-employed in nonmetro areas has risen from 2.9 million to 5.6 million, an increase of 93 percent. Farm ownerships, which were once the backbone of rural economies, have fallen from 2.1 million to 1.3 million, a 38 percent decrease.

The researchers did not find results as robust in metro counties. The share of self-employed workers was generally favorable for economic performance, but did not necessarily reduce family poverty levels.

Since larger counties tend to be more economically self-contained, economic conditions that prompt self-employment, such as sudden economic downturns, have less of an impact in those counties.

?On the other hand, rural counties are smaller, perhaps more open to commuter flows, and thus also more likely to be affected by events in adjacent counties,? Goetz says. ?They also have higher self-employment rates, so a larger proportion of the labor market would be affected if there is a shock.?

The researchers studied economic trends during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. They used long time periods as one way to ensure that self-employment was not caused by economic factors such as growth, but that it created growth.

Goetz says that economic leaders in rural areas should recognize and encourage self-employed entrepreneurs.

?Community leaders usually are thinking about big companies, and there?s a mindset that economic development comes from the outside?recruiting auto manufacturers and big stores, for example,? he says. ?But leaders also should celebrate local businesses and look at the self-employed, in addition, as important to the economy.?

Goetz says to encourage growth, leaders could also help the self-employed by organizing networking meetings and alerting them to exporting opportunities. Economic development groups also can assist entrepreneurs with credit and grant applications.
