Face scrub: Add a tablespoon amount of epsom salt to your current face wash to create a gentle exfoliator. This recipe also doubles as a body scrub, just mix with olive oil instead for soft, hydrated skin.
Hair clarifier: To remove gunk from products and other hair stylers, mix lemon juice, water and epsom salt to create a pre-shampoo cleanser.
Blackhead fighter: Combine a cup of hot water, epsom salt and a few drops of iodine, then apply the solution to the area. This blend helps loosen dead skin and clears pores.
Splinter remover: According to AARP, epsom salt "increases osmotic pressure on the skin, which draws foreign bodies toward the surface." This works for splinters, as well. Soak the area in a cup of water and epsom salt.

Utah governor says Chevron leak is unacceptable
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A series of spills from ruptured pipelines operated by Chevron Corp. has Utah's governor calling for more oversight.
Gov. Gary Herbert left no doubt about his displeasure Thursday when asked about the latest spill at a monthly televised news conference. He said the federal agency responsible for interstate pipelines isn't doing its job and that Utah will step up its own efforts to ensure pipeline safety.
The pipeline ruptured last week at Willard Bay State Park, spilling diesel fuel into marshes. It was Chevron's third pipeline leak in Utah in the last three years.
Another pipeline leak sent crude oil rushing down into a Salt Lake City creek in 2010. Months later, the same pipeline ruptured again.
Each pipeline leak involved a spill of 21,000 or more gallons of crude oil or fuel.
"If anything's been disappointing in the past couple of weeks, it's been this Chevron oil spill," Herbert said Thursday. "This is just not acceptable. We need to take a more proactive stance."
Herbert said his state departments of commerce and environmental quality are looking to hold Chevron more accountable.
"With interstate pipelines, that's a federal responsibility of the Pipeline Hazardous Material Public Safety Administration ? which is a mouthful to say ? but that's their responsibility, and obviously they've not done a very good job of overseeing the pipes that travel between our states," said Herbert, a Republican. "This is just not an acceptable situation. We will make sure that Chevron does what it needs to do to clean this mess up."
State officials are crediting a beaver dam for helping contain the fuel spill at Willard Bay State Park, but it left a family of beavers with petroleum burns. The beavers were rescued and are being doused three times a day in hourlong baths with Dawn dish soap to remove diesel fuel from their fur.
Chevron said Thursday that it had more than 130 people working in a round-the-clock cleanup operation.
"Chevron Pipe Line Co. regrets this incident and we are committed to remediating the affected area and mitigating all impacts on the environment," company spokesman Gareth Johnstone said in a statement. "Safety and environmental protection are core values for Chevron, and throughout this incident we continue to work with state and federal authorities."
The Pipeline Hazardous Material Public Safety Administration says it ordered Chevron to ensure safety before it restarts the pipeline.
"We are investigating the cause of the failure and we will carefully monitor the activities of Chevron Pipe Line Co. as we move forward with our enforcement efforts," said Jeannie Layson, a spokeswoman for the Pipeline Hazardous Material Public Safety Administration.
Chevron was fined more than $400,000 for the two earlier pipeline spills. It also paid a $4.5 million settlement to Utah and Salt Lake City and spent millions more cleaning up the first of three oil spills in 2010 that fouled Red Butte Creek, said Art Raymond, a spokesman for Mayor Ralph Becker.
"Chevron remains on the hook for any further cleanup if somebody turns over a rock and finds oil residue," Raymond said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's not the kind of performance that will win her another Academy Award, but Tilda Swinton certainly has them buzzing at the Museum of Modern Art.
But keep it down, please. She's trying to sleep.
The "Moonrise Kingdom star has been engaging in a different kind of performance art. She's presenting a one-person piece called "The Maybe," in which she lies sleeping in a glass box for the day. The first performance was over the weekend, and the museum won't say if there's a schedule for when exactly it will come back for six other performances.
On Monday, the display drew a line of spectators that wound through a whole second-floor gallery into a museum hallway.
Erwin Aschenbrenner, a bemused German tourist, said it "just what you'd expect to see at MoMA."
The actress "is so pale and not moving in there that she looks like she's dead," said Robbie von Kampen, 20, a philosophy major at Bard College, north of New York City.
But after about seven hours a day of the shuteye pose on a white mattress in the glass box ? with only a carafe of water and a glass to get her through ? Swinton can stretch and walk off into the Manhattan night. But only when spectators leave.
So what's the point?
"This makes me think about myself, looking at her," said Quinn Moreland, 20, also a Bard student, majoring in art history.
"You don't usually get to stare at somebody like this; it makes me self-conscious," she explained.
Added von Kampen, "Yeah, it's socially unacceptable ? it's kinda creepy."
No one, not even museum curators, could say whether the thin, mostly immobile Swinton is actually getting some sleep while people stare at her.
At least Swinton was comfortable. She wore a pair of grubby sneakers, dark sporty slacks and a checkered shirt. Her glasses lay on the mattress.
But no snacks were in sight. And none could be offered in the closed chamber.
Swinton also starred in a glass box in 1995 at London's Serpentine Gallery ? seven days, eight hours a day ? in an exhibition seen by 22,000 people.
The next year, she repeated the spectacle at the Museo Barracco in Rome.

Dell drama takes new twist with 2 new buyout bids
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The two new suitors pursuing Dell have a message for Wall Street: Don't allow Michael Dell to hoard potential gains from the PC maker's expansion into more profitable technology products and services.
Competing bidders Carl Icahn and the Blackstone Group LP are wooing Dell shareholders with an offer of a little more money today coupled with the possibility of even bigger returns if the struggling personal computer maker can pull off the turnaround envisioned by its CEO and founder, Michael Dell and a group of investors led by Silver Lake Partners.
The new bidders are also making a statement by proposing to maintain Dell Inc.'s status as a publicly traded company.
The long-awaited challenge to Michael Dell and Silver Lake began to unfold Monday with the announcement that Icahn, a billionaire investor with a long history of corporate confrontation, and the Blackstone, a major buyout firm, had submitted separate alternatives in an attempt to scuttle a $24.4 billion sales agreement that has been in place since Feb. 5.
If completed, the original deal would end Dell's 25-year history as a publicly traded company, leaving it entirely owned by Michael Dell, Silver Lake and a handful of other investors. The new bidders are taking advantage of a 45-day window that had been left open for better offers.
Although the details are still sketchy, both Icahn and Blackstone are offering to buy a portion of Dell Inc.'s outstanding stock at prices higher than the $13.65 per share that Michael Dell and Silver Lake have proposed to pay. Icahn is offering $15 per share for up to 58 percent of the company's existing stock while Blackstone will ante up more than $14.25 per share in cash or stock for an unspecified number of shares.
"We intend to work diligently with all three potential acquirers to ensure the best possible outcome for Dell shareholders, whichever transaction that may be," said Alex Mandl, the chairman of a four-person board committee overseeing the sale of the Round Rock, Texas company. For now, the committee is still recommending the deal put forth by Michael Dell and Silver Lake, though they are acknowledging the new offers could end up being more lucrative.
Dell's stock gained 37 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close Monday at $14.51. The shares have been trading above $14 most of this month, signaling that most investors expected alternative bids to emerge.
Monday's developments heighten the uncertainty surrounding Dell, the world's third largest PC maker behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Lenovo Group. Dell's cloudy future could rattle some corporate customers who may be more willing to do business with HP, Lenovo or other rivals. It also threatens to distract Dell's 111,000 workers at a critical time.
The bidding battle also could culminate in the departure of Michael Dell, who founded the company bearing his name in 1984 while still a teenager attending the University of Texas.
In a statement, Dell's special committee said Michael Dell is willing to work with other parties besides Silver Lake.
Getting Dell's cooperation will be crucial for either Icahn or Blackstone if they hope to gain control of the company, predicted analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.
"It would be naive to move forward without Michael Dell," Moorhead said. "He is the glue the keeps the place together."
Other analysts fault Michael Dell for not reacting more swiftly to a computing shift unleashed by the 2007 introduction of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and the 2010 release of Apple's iPad. Those products ushered in an era of powerful and elegantly designed mobile devices that are causing consumers and companies to spend less on PCs. The upheaval is crimping Dell's earnings and has left its stock well below its price of $24 when Michael Dell returned for his second stint as CEO in early 2007.
Michael Dell, who would contribute about $4.5 billion in cash and stock to finance his preferred deal, believes he will be in a better position to overhaul the company if he doesn't have to worry about catering to Wall Street's fixation on short-term earnings and revenue growth.
Icahn, Blackstone and other current Dell shareholders also believe the company can bounce back. They just don't want to see Dell sold at a perceived discount that would deny existing shareholders the benefits of a potential comeback.
Under Icahn's proposal, his group would spend more than $15.6 billion to buy 1.04 billion shares of Dell stock, leaving about 900 million of the existing shares still on the market. If Icahn didn't spend all the money earmarked for buying 58 percent of the outstanding stock, the remaining amount would be distributed in the form of a special dividend. Icahn said he and his affiliates currently own about $1 billion worth of Dell's stock.
Blackstone's proposal doesn't spell out how much money it would spend to buy Dell's existing stock, nor does it estimate how much stock would remain trading on the Nasdaq exchange. The New York firm said it hopes to team up with Michael Dell and also hopes to work with other major company shareholders, including Southeastern Asset Management and the T. Rowe Price Group. Both of those shareholders, who combined own nearly 13 percent of Dell's stock, oppose the offer currently backed by Michael Dell.
In a letter to Dell's special committee, Blackstone predicted its bid would be more "compelling" than the deal proposed by Michael Dell and Silver Lake.
If the deal with Michael Dell and Silver Lake falls apart, they would be owed a $180 million breakup fee.
The flexibility of the two new bids appeals to Bill Nygren, manager of the Oakmark Fund and affiliates, which owns about 25 million shares of Dell stock.
"Given the wide range of estimated values for Dell shares, if all else is nearly equal, we believe a proposal is superior if it allows investors who want to remain invested in Dell the opportunity to do so," Nygren said.
Dell shareholders who choose to retain some of the company's stock will be assuming the risk that things could get even worse if the turnaround plan flops and the sales in the slumping PC market deteriorate even more.
Although Dell has expanded into business software, technology consulting services and storage products, about 70 percent of its revenue remains tied to PCs and peripheral products, estimated Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. That's one of the main reasons Dell's stock price had slipped below $10 before talk of a buyout began swirling earlier this year.
"What is going on now is quite good for Dell shareholders," Wu said. "It's a bit like a bailout."

Peru declares Amazon oil contamination emergency
LIMA, Peru (AP) ? Peru's government declared an environmental state of emergency on Monday in a remote Amazon jungle region it says has been affected by years of contamination at the country's most productive oil fields, which are currently operated by Argentina-based Pluspetrol.
Indigenous groups in the Pastaza River basin near the Ecuador border have been complaining for years about the pollution and the failure of successive governments to address it. Authorities say one reason the pollution was never addressed is that until now Peru lacked the requisite environmental quality standards.
In declaring the emergency, Peru's Environment Ministry said the contamination included high levels of lead, barium and chromium as well as petroleum-related compounds. The region is inhabited mostly by the Quichua and Ashuar, who are primarily hunter-gatherers.
The fields have been operated for roughly 12 years by Pluspetrol, the country's biggest oil and natural gas producer, and it will be obliged to clean up the contamination, said Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.
The government also said the field's previous operator, Occidental Petroleum, had not adequately remediated contamination either. It began drilling there in 1971. Pluspetrol took over in 2001.
The 90-day emergency orders immediate action to reduce the risk of contamination to the local population.
It follows an $11 million fine levied against Pluspetrol in January.
"We know that there has been bad environmental behavior by the company," Pulgar-Vidal said of Pluspetrol in a radio interview. "If indeed at some point remediation was done, it was not done adequately and that includes inadequate action by the authorities from 2003-2005."
Pluspetrol did not immediately respond to telephone calls and email messages requesting comment.
Pulgar-Vidal did not describe the extent of the contamination or estimate what it would cost to clean up.
His ministry said in a statement posted on its website that the government began administrative actions against Pluspetrol in March 2012 over contamination at block 1AB, long Peru's biggest crude oil field.
The president of the Quichua Federation of Pastaza, Sixto Shapiama, hailed the emergency as "a great achievement because for many years, decades, the government never wanted to see the reality."
The area has for decades seen "constant (oil) spills," said Shapiama from the regional capital of Iquitos, adding that "the sediment at the bottom of the river is completely contaminated."
The Peruvian TV news magazine Panorama showed Reps. Marisol Perez Tello and Veronika Mendoza visiting crude-permeated rivers in the area as well as the deteriorating oil pipeline that pumps crude to the Pacific coast.
"The government is to blame because it has permitted this," Perez said Monday.
It published on Monday, for the first time, environmental quality standards setting acceptable limits for contaminants in soil. Peru didn't have an environment ministry until 2008 and the mining and energy ministry remains in charge of approving environmental impact statement for the extractive industries.
The investigative weekly "Hildebrand en sus Trece" reported in 2010 that Pluspetrol had 78 oil spills in the region from 2006-2010, and Shapiama blamed the spills for ailments including birth defects and spontaneous abortions.
A British religious activist who has worked with the affected indigenous populations, Paul McAuley, told The Associated Press in 2010 that he was astounded word of the contamination had hardly spread outside the jungle.
He said not just the Pastaza, but two other river basins where Pluspetrol has oil fields, are contaminated: The Corrientes and the Tigre. All are tributaries of the Amazon.
McAuley, a lay activist with the La Salle Christian Brothers, founded the Loreto Environmental Network in 2004 to support the indigenous groups in their struggle to end the pollution.
In 2010, Peru's government tried to expel McAuley, alleging he was inciting unrest among the indigenous.
His expulsion, challenged by the Roman Catholic Church and groups including Amnesty International, was eventually halted by a judge.
Alan Garcia, as president from 2006-2011, opened up the Amazon to mining and oil exploration and drilling. Current President Ollanta Humala has faced a backlash in the form of growing protests.

Premier visits tornado victims
PREMIER Denis Napthine has urged Victorians to visit the tornado-ravaged communities along the Murray River over the Easter holidays, saying it will be the best way to help the battered towns recover.
Dr Napthine flew in on Sunday to inspect the damage from the ground and the air, including visiting a fruit farm that was flattened by the ferocious winds.
The State Emergency Service said 24 houses were uninhabitable because of damage caused by the tornado.
There are 15 uninhabitable houses in Koonoomoo, seven in Bundalong and two in Rutherglen; another 35 properties have been damaged in the region.
The tornadoes passed through the state's north-east on Thursday evening, with most damage occurring in Yarrawonga, Bundalong, Rutherglen, Mulwala, Koonoomoo and Cobram, injuring dozens of people.
Dr Napthine visited Koonoomoo and Bundalong and told reporters the ''devastating tornado'' had been classified in the F3 category, with winds between 250km/h and 300km/h.
''The devastation in the area affected has just been horrific,'' Dr Napthine said.
''One of the best ways you can help this community recover is to come up here to visit.
''Come up here over Easter; it will be open for business, it will be a great place to visit and come up here and show your support for the local community.''
Dr Napthine paid tribute to the resilience of residents and the hard work of SES volunteers and the local council. He acknowledged the damage to businesses, as well as homes.
''It is a very narrow strip of affected area, but the devastation of those affected properties and those particular businesses and farms has been astronomical,'' Dr Napthine said.
The state and federal governments have announced assistance packages and Dr Napthine said he would continue talking to the Commonwealth about what other assistance could be offered, especially to businesses.
The Insurance Council said the incident had not been declared a ''catastrophe'', so it was hard to put a figure on the damage bill.
The council has urged anyone affected to lodge claims as soon as possible with insurers, which it said would work quickly to assist policyholders.
''It is very important that insurers come and assess the damage and give homeowners the go-ahead to undertake repairs.''
