Starz Play movies disappear from Netflix streaming this week

A little more than three years after arriving on Netflix's Watch Instantly streaming service, Starz is packing up its online package of movies and original TV shows and heading home at the end of this month. While the deal brought in high profile movies from Disney and Sony (not to mention shows like Spartacus and Boss), it's also caused problems with the availability of certain movies / features on the Xbox 360, a renegotiation of terms between Starz and Disney followed by the removal of Sony's flicks from the service last year. Finally Starz reportedly asked Netflix to change its pricing strategy to a tiered one, but the companies couldn't agree and renewal negotiations ended September 1st of last year. Netflix is trying to fill the gap with more deals directly with studios and offering its own original shows, while the selection of kid-friendly movies will be supplemented by a Dreamworks arrangement that kicks off in 2013.

That means subscribers have until midweek to enjoy Toy Story 3, Tangled or about 800 (mostly somewhat lesser-known) other movies that may be kicking around in their queues. While Netflix breaks out the Starz Play titles on its site, TVandMoviesNOW has put together a list of all of them, sortable by release date, rating, genre and other items including the 50 or so that are viewable on Amazon's Prime streaming service. We probably won't dive in too deeply since the movies lack HD res and surround sound, but if you haven't seen Party Down yet then this is the time.

Leading politician denies economic downturn is a threat to Northern ...

McDowell dismisses theory that dissidents will prosper

Michael McDowell

One of Ireland?s top politicians has claimed the Ulster Peace Process will survive the economic downturn on both sides of the border.

Former deputy Prime Minister and Attorney-General Michael McDowell is adamant the recession won?t aid dissident terrorists on either side of the political divide.

Some politicians fear the economic woes currently being experienced in the North could raise support for those opposed to reconciliation.

Speaking at a Dublin conference, the one time Green Party leader refuted the suggestion.

?I don?t believe there is a fundamental risk that we could slip back into conflict,? said McDowell.

?Economic deprivation offers opportunities for radical change but it is easier to maintain consensus in a society when plenty of resources are available.

?In the North, this funding had served as a lubricant to transform things for the better in the peace process.

?The question now is whether the downturn poses a threat to the new arrangements in Northern Ireland. I?m optimistic. It shouldn?t and I don?t think it will.

?The fact that the Republic has entered into a profound economic crisis has halted the gallop of people who thought North-South relations were a one-way street with an inevitable outcome.?

The Co-operation Ireland student journalism conference in Dublin, sponsored by The Irish Times, also heard from Jim Fitzpatrick, business and economics editor of BBC Northern Ireland.

?The North is suffering a democratic overload and needs a reworking of government that prioritises the economy over the peace process,? he said.

?Whereas the Republic, despite its current problems, has created a vibrant export economy, the belief that the North is a failed economy is not confined to republicans.

?Northern Ireland is a taker, not a giver in terms of its fiscal dependence on the rest of the UK with an annual deficit $14billion a year, equivalent to $7,000 a person.

?We are in constant bailout mode, with a handout culture from top to bottom.?

He said the biggest beneficiaries were at the top, including lawyers earning more than $1.5 million million a year in fees from the public purse and police officers who retired on generous redundancy packages but were re-employed by the PSNI as consultants.

He claimed one in 10 people in the North was on disability living allowance, 30 percent of the population was economically inactive and median pay was 42 percent higher than in the rest of the UK.

?Yet the political class is so enamoured of their peace process they only really pay lip service to prioritising the economy,? he said

?People are not incentivised to work, they?re incentivised to maintain the status quo.?

Investing In Offshore Wind Power | Alternative Energy Stocks

Tom Konrad CFA

Offshore Wind in the United States

Last week, the long-embattled Cape Wind project got a break: Utility NStar(NST) agreed to buy 27.5% of the proposed offshore wind project's output.? Together with a previous power purchase agreement with National Grid (NGG), this gives Cape Wind a buyer for 77.5% of the project's total projected output.? Jim Gordon, Cape Wind's President speaking at Offshore Wind Power USA in Boston, called the NStar deal the "starting gun" for Cape Wind's financing round.

Yet speakers and attendees at Offshore Wind Power USA agreed that the Cape Wind story remains a cautionary tale for potential offshore wind developers, rather than a signal the the US offshore market is open for business.? While the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has made progress in defining the leasing process, this process is still expected to take six to eight years to complete.? There remains a notable lack of coordination between and among the score federal and state agencies which have a say in the process.

Perhaps more importantly, the Production Tax Credit (PTC) and Investment Tax Credit (ITC) were not extended as part of the payroll tax cut extension.? The American Wind Energy Association is continuing to pursue the PTC extension through other legislation, but many observers at the Offshore Wind conference opined that these incentives will not see any action until Congress' lame duck session, after November election.? Few offshore wind developers are willing to invest to move their projects forward until they have some certainty about the PTC and ITC, so most offshore wind projects in the United States are likely to remain on hold at least until the end of the year.

Europe

Offshore wind in the US is far from the whole story.? The European Offshore Wind industry is entering its full commercial stage, with projects amounting to several gigawatts of capacity expected to be built over the next few years, making the global industry worthy of investors' attention.

European offshore wind is not without hiccups.? The European financial crisis has slowed (but not stopped) financing for wind farms, despite the fact that some farms require investments in the billion Euro range.? Another recent problem, which will be familiar to onshore wind developers, is grid interconnection.? Although Germany has a legal requirement that transmission operators connect new wind farms to the grid, this is an unfunded mandate, and the transmission companies do not have the funding or even enough of the right sort of cable to meet this obligation in a timely fashion.? Grid connections for two large wind farms were recently delayed by 12 and 15 months because of such problems, costing the developers hundreds of millions of euros in electricity sales.

Offshore Wind as an Investment

Such hiccups happen in new industries, and they can lead to buying opportunities for investors.? Often the best time to buy stock is after most people realize everything is not smooth sailing, but before all the problems are resolved.? This allows excess returns, as stocks which were initially priced as highly risky investments gain value as the industry learns to tackle such challenges.

?As the only renewable energy resource able to produce power on the scale of hundreds of gigawatts close to the world's most energy-hungry and population dense cities in Europe and America's Eastern seaboard, offshore wind will play a prominent role in the transition away from fossil fuels.? The only question in my mind is when this transition will occur.? My feeling is that this maturation of the offshore wind market (at least in Europe) will come within the next few years, leading to substantial rewards for investors with good timing.

Offshore Wind Stocks

Most onshore wind turbine manufacturers either already have turbines designed for offshore use, or are developing them.? The current market leaders are Siemens (SI) and Vestas (VWDRY.PK), but Vestas is rapidly losing ground to a host of new entrants, including Chinese players like Sinovel (601558.SS) who are largely responsible for the fierce price competition which led to the poor performance of wind power stocks in 2011.?

Given the inauspicious competitive environment among turbine manufacturers, I think better investments are to be found in other parts of the wind farm.? According to Walt Musial, the manager of offshore wind and ocean power systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the turbines only account for 32% of the cost of a wind farm, on average.? Fully 52% of the cost lies in other farm components, such as support structures, the undersea cables that collect power from the turbines and send it to shore, and the various power converters needed.

In short, many of the best offshore wind investments are the companies I call Strong Grid Stocks: the companies which help grid operators move electricity in bulk.? I'd include among these cable manufacturers such as Prysmian (PRYMF.PK) and General Cable (BGC) (recall the German wind farms with grid connections delayed in part because of lack of cable, a sign of scarcity which leads to pricing power.)? I'd also include the companies such as Siemens (SI), ABB Group (ABB), and Alstom (AOMFF.PK) who supply many aspects of the power conversion and interconnection hardware needed to tie wind farms to the grid.? One of the reasons Siemens is expected to maintain its position as the world's leading offshore turbine supplier for the next few years is the company's ability to supply many of the parts and services offshore wind farms require in addition to the turbines.? Alstom also seems to be following this strategy by introducing a broad range of new products (including a new 6MW direct drive turbine) for offshore wind.

Besides equipment manufacturers, offshore wind is likely to be a boon to shipbuilders with the capability of constructing the specialized ships needed to install large wind turbines and foundations, which are in short supply.? Harbors near promising wind farms will also have to be improved to accommodate the large ships needed to install them, which is likely to help dredging companies such as Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD).

Conclusion

Offshore wind is destined to be a significant part of the energy seascape in the coming decades, and the industry is just getting its sea legs at the beginning of what will prove to be a long voyage.? As of yet, I feel it it too early for most stock market investors to embark on this particular cruise, except perhaps on the sturdy platform of a large company with businesses in many other sectors, but which stands to benefit from the future growth of what promises to be a large and prominent renewable energy sector.

Coughlin wants to coach another 4-5 years

NY Giants head coach Tom Coughlin shows off the Vince Lombardi trophy after Big Blue?s 21-17 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

Robert Sabo/New York Daily News

NY Giants' Tom Coughlin shows off the Vince Lombardi trophy after Big Blue?s 21-17 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

INDIANAPOLIS ? Tom Coughlin is 65 years old, with nearly three decades of coaching experience in the NFL, but he says he isn?t close to being done. The coach of the Super Bowl-champion Giants has another four or five years in him, he said, and he?d like to spend them in New York.

?Everybody thought I was kidding when I said, what 72?? he said, referring to a joke he?d made during the regular season about coaching into his 70s. ?I?ll lean on that.?

Coughlin is set to coach the Giants in 2012, but he arrived at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium with nothing in place after that. Team owner John Mara said after the Super Bowl that he planned to discuss an extension with Coughlin in the coming weeks, but on Friday, Coughlin said that no in-depth talks have taken place.

?We haven?t talked seriously,? he said.

Still, it seems likely that Coughlin will get a lengthy extension after his second Lombardi Trophy in the last four years. The coach who battled numerous questions about his future before Big Blue?s late-season surge was at peace about it.

?It?ll be going forward,? he said.

The rest of the team has Coughlin concerned. The Giants spent the last two months rattling off six straight wins on their way to the Super Bowl title. But the realities of the NFL offseason threaten to wreck that chemistry. Victor Cruz wants more money; Mario Manningham, who made the catch of the Super Bowl, could leave via free agency; and Brandon Jacobs could still be cut before he?s due a $500,000 roster bonus next month.

Coughlin has already lost a pair of key offensive assistants ? QB coach Mike Sullivan, who is now the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay, and assistant line coach Jack Bicknell Jr., who took over as O-line coach in Kansas City. But he hopes to keep the nucleus intact, starting with the much-maligned Jacobs, who has said he would take another pay cut to return to New York.

?Brandon?s been an outstanding part of our team for any number of years (and) two Super Bowl teams,? Coughlin said. ?And as far as I?m concerned, he?s a big part (of the future).?

So too is pass-rushing defensive end Osi Umenyiora, Coughlin said. Umenyiora is under contract for the upcoming season, and he has said he doesn?t plan to replicate last year?s tumultuous offseason, when he requested a trade and staged a brief holdout.

When asked if he expected Umenyiora to remain, Coughlin responded quickly: ?I do.?

It is Manningham who seems most likely to leave. According to reports, no progress has been made, and he plans to test the free agent market.

?You?d love to have him back,? Coughlin said. ?We?re not naive. The guy just made a Super Bowl memorable play.?

Friends deleted at record rate: Pew

By Bob Sullivan

Facebook is apparently getting a lot more unfriendly.

Users are getting a lot more selective, deleting comments, photo tags and even friends at a record rate, according to a new study released Friday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Pew is calling this phenomenon "the pruning" of social networks, and?the study?includes findings like this: 63 percent of users have unfriended people from their friends users. Another 44 percent have deleted comments made by others from their profile page, and 37 percent have removed tags from photos.

"Social network users are becoming more active in pruning and managing their accounts," says the report, written by Mary Madden, senior research specialist at Pew.

Users are also taking an active role in keeping their private information private, with 58 percent of users saying they use high-level privacy settings so only friends can view their pages.?Women are far more restrictive, with 67 percent using the tightest privacy settings, compared to 48 percent of men. They lock down their accounts despite the fact that half of all users say they have "some difficulty" using the privacy controls.

The research seems to suggest that U.S. adults, who have so far shown little appetite for actively managing their personal privacy, are starting to get the hang of it.

"Social science researchers have long noted a major disconnect in attitudes and practices around information privacy online. When asked, people say that privacy is important to them; when observed, people?s actions seem to suggest otherwise," the report noted. The shift to more privacy on Facebook seems to belie this long-standing trend.

Perhaps regret has something to do with that.? The report found that 11 percent of Facebook users say they've posted something that they regret on a social network. Men are twice as likely to say so (15 percent to 8 percent). Users 50 and older, at 5 percent, are much less likely than young adults under 29 (15 percent), to express such regret.?

One area where there was a surprising lack of age gap: Overall privacy settings. While 23 percent of users 65 and over choose fully public settings, 22 percent of users 18-29make the same choice.

"The choices that adults make regarding their privacy settings are also virtually identical to those of teenage social media users," the report said.? "Private settings are the norm, regardless of age."

Young adults are more likely to "unfriend," however at 71 percent, compared to just 41 percent for the oldest users.

The Pew report is based on a survey of 2,277 U.S. adults conducted in May, and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.? In nearly all "pruning" related categories, and within nearly all age groups, use of privacy-related tools gained ground since the last time Pew conducted the study in 2009. Back then, only 30 percent of all users had untagged a photo, compared to 37 percent in 2011; and 56 percent had unfriended someone, compared to 63 percent in 2011.?

And Australian city of Adelaide is perhaps the one most favoured destination by them!

Adelaide is visited in hordes by solo travellers as the place offers beauty as well as affordability.

Backpackers booking cheap flights to Adelaide would do well do take care of the following information.

Visa

Britons are required to arrange a visa before they book flights to Adelaide. Tourists who are contemplating a short trip to the city can obtain a tourist visa, however backpackers with a wider and expansive agenda can opt for the Working Holiday Visa. This is the most popular backpacker visa that allows young people to travel and work in Australia (restrictions & conditions apply) usually for 12 months. Britons can visit FCO?s official website for detailed and updated information on the issue.

Travel Insurance

It is imperative to have a comprehensive travel insurance plan for yourself before you leave for the country.

Here's another Internet meme game for your future nostalgia

15 hrs.

It's only a matter of time before Parker Brothers or some other such mega family game conglomerate mass produce a board game based on the Internet's favorite pastime ? image macro memes. As it is, super imposing funny phrases over amusing photos or illustrations (that's what an image macro is, BTW), is now so mainstream that more than a few self-starters have made a go of it.

The latest comes in a form of a drinking board game that uses 24 memes as spaces, reports Mashable.

Starting with the Rent Is Too Damn High guy and ending with the Most Interesting Man in the World, the game is currently all the rage on Reddit, and features meme favorites such as Scumbag Steve, High Expectations Asian Father, Annoying Facebook Girl, and more. (Click the dang links if you have no idea what I'm talking about ? though at this point, you should. You're on the Internet right now, after all.)?

The Meme Drinking Board Game, created by Reddit user Marc Sloan, follows other attempts at meme gamification, including the Rage Face Drinking Game, the Kickstarter-funded For the Win, and a not-so-successful meme card game.?

As Mashable notes, one fan has already posted an Internet version of Sloan's Meme Drinking game ? ? which serves to illustrate the built-in flaw with any meme based game that attempts a static existence outside the Internet.

We love memes because they're not static. Each and every iteration of something the Most Interesting Man in the World doesn't always do -- or some new bit of advice from Insanity Wolf?-- causes us to spit coffee, Diet Coke, Red Bull, what have you, because the funny is fresh and ever-evolving. ?Once you've laminated the gag, it ceases to be amusing.?

Though I'm sure alcohol doesn't hurt.?

More on the annoying way we live now:?

In Darkness: movie review (+trailer)

The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on the heroism of a Polish sewer inspector during the country's 1942 German occupation.

Agnieszka Holland's powerful "In Darkness" is set in 1942 in ?the eastern Polish city of Lvov at a time when it was occupied by the Germans and their Ukrainian allies. The city's Christian inhabitants, battered and war-weary, are still far better off than the Jews, whom the Nazis randomly shoot in the streets and ghettoize en route to their eventual deportation to concentration camps.

To provide for his wife and daughter, and also, we sense, because he likes the thrill of the hunt, he and his accomplice (Krzysztof Skonieczny) loot the abandoned buildings of Jews. Because of Socha's knowledge of the sewers, the local Ukrainian Nazi officer offers him an added financial incentive to root out the Jews hiding underground.

Unlike most Holocaust-themed movies, even some of the strongest (like "Schindler's List"), "In Darkness," which is based on true events and is Oscar-nominated for best foreign film, doesn't draw clear lines of demarcation between the righteous and the venal. Socha initially keeps several Jewish families hidden away, not because he is noble but because the Jews make him a better offer ? a richer bribe. And the Jews crammed into the blackness and the stench are not sentimentalized. One man, for example, has abandoned his wife and daughter for his mistress, whom he likewise abandons when she becomes pregnant. With the exception of the group's leader, Mundek Margulies (Benno F?rmann), who is portrayed in classic stalwart-hero mold, none of the Jews are given the star treatment.

This is as it should be. Holland and her screenwriter David Shamoon (whose parents fled Baghdad to escape Iraq's persecution of Jews) understand that suffering isn't necessarily ennobling and that sometimes goodness emanates from the unlikeliest sources ? in this case, Socha. The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on his heroism. This man who dislikes Jews and initially thinks only of his own profit, gradually, fitfully, is transformed by the end into someone who risks even the lives of his own family, whom he loves, in order to save the people he calls "my Jews."

Holland has made excellent movies in this vein before, especially the 1991 "Europa Europa," but "In Darkness" is her most unremitting achievement. The reason we feel so close to Socha, a man who at first seems nothing more than a racist scoundrel, is that his moral odyssey, with its advances and retreats, is so emotionally believable. Holland could not have chosen a better actor to play Socha, whose burliness and blank eyes are, as it turns out, camouflage for the valiant human within. (Wieck?ie?wicz has been amply honored in Poland for his stage and film work, almost all of which is maddeningly unavailable in the United States.)

There are sequences in this film that are almost impossible to take, such as the one in which the cries of a mother's newborn risks exposing the entire group, but for the most part Holland avoids depicting the full horror of the Jews' entrapment. (The assumption is that we already know the horrors.) When the story is periodically brought above ground, into the daylight, the effect is both exhilarating and unsettling. The bright, wide world looks like freedom after all that blackness, but this is an illusion: Death is here, too.

In the film's climax, the rain pouring down from the sky threatens to turn the sewers into a death trap. This is when Socha demonstrates his true mettle. He is possessed beyond reason by his need to save the Jews. Like few other movies, "In Darkness" gets at the mania of those who would risk everything to save others. Socha is bewildered by the man he has become, and exultant, too. He astonishes himself ? and us. Grade: A (Rated R for violence, disturbing images, sexuality, nudity, and language.)

Dual Interpretations: Milky Way's Outer Fringe of Stars Sparks Disagreement

News | Space

Resolving how the galaxy's halo of stars was assembled would provide important clues about galactic formation

Simulation of Milky Way halo assemblyHOW MANY HALOS? A simulation of halo formation by the accretion of large numbers of galaxies. Image: Bullock & Johnston (2005)

It's well known that the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, a swirl of stars in an extended, many-armed disk. But the structure of the galaxy is far from two-dimensional. Above and below those familiar spiral arms is a lesser-known feature, a spherical swarm of stars that makes up a halo around the disk.

For decades the presence of the halo has prodded astronomers to ask big questions about its nature: How is it structured? How do stars in the halo compare with disk stars such as our sun, or to stars elsewhere in the halo? And just how did the halo get there? In recent years a group of astronomers has suggested an answer to some of those big questions by drawing on a large telescopic survey of the sky.

The halo, they have concluded, is composed of at least two distinct populations of stars, with different chemical makeups and different orbits. One group of stars, dubbed the inner halo, generally orbits closer to the galactic center, and its members tend to contain more heavy elements such as iron than do stars farther out. (Halo stars as a whole are depleted in these heavy elements, relative to stars in the galactic disk.) Stars of the outer halo occupy somewhat wider orbits around the galactic center, contain lower levels of heavy elements, and?unlike the inner halo?tend to follow retrograde orbits, circling the Milky Way in a direction counter to the rotation of the galactic disk.

"We don't think it's just one halo," says Timothy Beers, an astronomer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and Michigan State University, who was lead author on a recent study in The Astrophysical Journal. Beers, Daniela Carollo of Macquarie University in Australia and their colleagues based their analysis on data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a long-running telescopic campaign based at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. "We advocate the position that we are looking at a minimum of a dual halo," he says.

As the Milky Way built up by accretion of smaller galaxies, the inner and outer halo would represent two different epochs of galactic assembly. "We actually think that the formation scenario was something you could describe as a multiphase assembly," Beers says. The inner halo would represent the remnants of relatively massive dwarf galaxies, which coalesced early on. Lighter-weight galaxies would have attached themselves later on in a very gradual agglomeration to form the outer halo.

The inner and outer halo are not cleanly divided, but the differences in how the two populations move could aid astronomers in finding extremely primitive stars, which contain primarily hydrogen and helium. Those were the raw materials for the first generation of stars, early in the history of the universe; subsequent generations contained heavier elements that were fused in stellar cores and supernovae and then released into interstellar space. "Knowing that you have this dichotomy helps direct us to finding these interesting low-metallicity stars," Beers says. Outer-halo stars could be identified for detailed study by their distinctive motions on the sky. "Those are the ones that tell the story of how the universe built its elements," Beers says.

But not everyone agrees that the facts support the dual-halo interpretation. "I have a very relaxed opinion about single halos, dual halos, multiple halos," says astrophysicist Ralph Sch?nrich, a NASA Hubble Fellow at The Ohio State University. "I don't mind any idea of a dual halo. It's just that I don't see any evidence for it."

My Credit Card Rewards for 2011: Almost ... - Free Money Finance

Last year was a banner year for me in credit card rewards. Why? Because I hit the trifecta: I increased the amount I spent using my credit cards, I got some cards with terrific cash back levels, and I received some very nice bonuses for getting new cards.

Before we get into the specifics of 2011, here's what I've earned historically:

The results for 2011 show how my strategy evolved over the course of the year. Here's what I earned by card.

  • FIA Services card: $496.48. This is the old "Schwab" card that I used for much of the year until they tried to replace it with the cut-rate Bank of America card (which I cancelled). When this card was discontinued I re-evaluated my credit card strategy and changed to a new, multi-card effort.

  • Citi Dividend World card: $550. This is a card offer I received in the mail (and have never seen online.) It is a 1% cash back card but for the first year they gave a bonus 1%, so it's a 2% card (on everything). It also came with a sign-up bonus which I believe was $150. I got this card shortly after the FIA card died and I'll use it until the bonus runs out. I was able to rack up so much on it because I charged a good amount of business travel as well as many of my charitable contributions on it.

  • Chase Freedom? Visa: $351.02. I maxed out most of the 5% cash back bonuses this year as well as added on extras because I have a Chase checking account. This card still heads my list of the best cash back credit cards -- especially if you carry only one or two cards. (FYI, it still has a $200 cash bonus if you get a new one.)

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred? Card: $625. Absolutely wonderful bonus for signing up -- saved me a ton of money on the flights (which I purchased in 2011) we used for our cruise. It also has no foreign transaction fees, so we used it on our trip. This was my first points-based credit card in some time, but given the great reviews it's received, I may be using more of it in 2012. (FYI, this card is still on my shortlist of the best credit card bonus offers since $625 is nothing to sneeze at.)

  • American Express Blue Cash Preferred: $275.95. This is the 6% cash back card on grocery purchases that converts to 6% on other things if you can buy a gift card for it at your grocery store (FYI, do a test charge before assuming this will work at your store). I wish that there were more gift cards to use and that it wasn't such a hassle managing them. Or better yet, I wish this card just gave 6% cash back automatically on everything. That would be GREAT!!!!!???

  • TrueEarnings? Card from Costco and American Express: $299.43. I used this card for three things: 1) purchases at Costco, 2) gas (when I didn't have a gift card at 6% or the Chase Freedom card didn't have a 5% bonus), and 3) (the biggie) our cruise purchased through Costco (which earned 2% cash back.)

  • Gold Delta SkyMiles? Credit Card from American Express: $187.50. This is the value I assigned the points I received for signing up for the card, but it does NOT include the $150 I saved by using the card to skip baggage fees (because these savings were in 2012). I'm expecting this card to save me $300 to $400 this year in baggage fees alone.

All these add up to a grand total of $2,288.90! Wow! What a year! Over $2k for simply taking some time and effort to buy things in one way (with a card) over another (with cash or a check.) Of course that's still a ways behind what this guy earned, but I'm catching up to him. ;-)

One thing I haven't included is the amount I charged this year. That's because with the number of cards I opened and closed as well as both the rewards themselves and the bonuses, it was difficult to get an exact amount charged -- and I didn't want to tell you a false number. But an educated guess would be that I earned 2.5% to 3% cash back on average in 2011, so that would mean charges somewhere between $40,000 and $48,000 if I take out the large bonuses I know about. I was able to reach these levels because 1) I traveled for work a lot this past year and charged the costs (and was reimbursed by my company), 2) I charged almost everything pertaining to our cruise, and 3) I made a significant portion of my charitable contributions with a card, including those from my Red Kettle Challenge.

How about you? How much in cash back rewards did you earn in 2011?
