How To Improve Self Esteem In Seven Steps

Self esteem is broadly how we feel about ourselves. We develop our self esteem as we live life each day; we don't inherit it or have it since we were born. Most people would like to live a happy and successful life but this is often hard to attain particularly for people who suffer from low self-esteem. Good thing, our self esteem is not written in stone--it can be changed. However, you cannot just improve your self esteem instantly, it is a long and often arduous process that needs dedication. To guide you on how to improve self esteem, below are 7 simple steps:

Step One

Assess your problems realistically. You have to have a realistic evaluation of your problems so you can find the correct solutions for them. For instance, traffic and a bad hair day won't become problems if you don't assess them as such. Difficulties, problems and challenges will always be a part of life.

So you have to learn to accept the fact that life is and will never be perfect. If our appraisals are realistic, we're better able to respond to day-to-day life events with a sense of proportion.

Step Two

Do away with the comparison game. You will always find people who will be more talented or less talented than you are. If you keep on comparing, you will find yourself feeling inferior very often.

Step Three

Point out triggers to low self-esteem. Determine which areas in your life are actually pulling your self esteem down and avoid them or better yet, find ways to improve them. For example, if it is the way you look that is causing you to feel bad about yourself, take measures to improve it--go to the gym and dress well.

Step Four

Stop criticizing yourself.

If you keep on criticizing and pulling yourself down, you will never develop a healthy level of self esteem. Instead, repeat positive statements and affirmations. Positive affirmations allow you to experience positive and motivating feelings. Whether speaking about your image, your career or your finances, avoid deprecating yourself, or running yourself down. Keep in mind that you ought to be your number one. Love and appreciate yourself, so others could do so as well!

Step Five

Be surrounded by people who support you and make you feel positive at all times. If you form friendships with people who are pessimistic and controlling, you are likely going to feel bad about yourself often. On the other hand, your self esteem is sure to improve if you are constantly in the company of people who encourage you all the time and accept you for who you are.

Step Six

Take action! You won't be able to develop a healthy level of self esteem if you don't do anything about your self esteem issues. Taking action will make you Feel Better About yourself, regardless if you succeed or fail. When you fail to move forward because of fear and anxiety, you'll be disappointed and sad; and you will undoubtedly deal with a hurtful blow to your self-esteem.

Step Seven

Do not be difficult on yourself when you do not accomplish exactly what you would like to. As humans we are bound to be unsuccessful sometimes. So rather of being resentful about the whole thing, readjust your goals or try harder next time. Almost any negative experience can be turned into a positive experience with the right attitude.
