Is it possible to encrypt a Galaxy Nexus phone with a password but not require the password to unlock once it's on?

The "Encrypt" option in the settings says that you have to lock your phone with a PIN or password before encrypting, and that the device will require this PIN or password every time you turn it on. Is it possible to encrypt with a password that will be required at turn on, but only lock the screen with a PIN (or not at all)?

A?strong password is important for encryption, but it's too cumbersome to type a password every time you unlock the screen.
